Assessment

In accordance with North Dakota Century Code 15.1-21-08.1, a custodial parent may opt out of certain individual assessments.  The parental directive does not apply to:

  1. Any test or assessment required by the student’s school district of enrollment or this state for the completion of any grade from Kindergarten through Grade Twelve;
  2. Any test or assessment required by the student’s school district of enrollment or the state for high school graduation;
  3. ACT; or
  4. WorkKeys assessments.

Since each district provides its own interim assessments, the state form has provided an option for “other”.  Based on the interim assessments of the district, the only options under “other” that will be approved by the district are the STAR and Dibels assessments.

The STAR Assessment is an interim assessment used by the district for progress monitoring.  It is administered to each student in grades K-11

The Dibels Assessment is an interim assessment used by the district for progress monitoring.  It is administered to each student in grades K-5.

A parental directive is valid only if it is presented to the school district using the standardized form, prepared by the Department of Public Instruction, and signed by the student's custodial parent. One form must be completed for each student for each individual assessment. A parental directive is valid only until the conclusion of the school year in which it is received by the school district.

Completed forms can be sent to:
