JPS Instructional Plan #1

At a special meeting tonight, January 6, 2021, the Jamestown School Board approved the recommendation of the Instructional Plan Review Team to move to Instructional Plan #1 beginning on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. In Instructional Plan #1, all K-12 buildings will operate with a face-to-face schedule each day of the week (M-F).  We are able to make this change because of our staff and student commitment to mitigation strategies that we know to be effective.  As such, we will be continuing all of these strategies, including the requirement of masks.

As we have throughout the school year, the Instructional Plan Review Team will continue to meet on a regular basis to make data-driven recommendations to our school board.  The board will review and act upon these recommendations at every regular school board meeting to ensure we are appropriately responsive to the conditions.

Thank you to all staff, students, parents and community members for your support throughout the pandemic.  Our teachers, support staff, administration and central office staff have been able to persevere through these challenges because of your support.  I am so very proud of our district and what we have been able to do to continue to provide a great education for our students.

Take care.

School Lunch To-Go Meal Option

Jamestown Public School District would like to offer your students a meal option for the days they are not on campus and in need of meals on those days.  These meals will be charged according to eligibility status—the same price as in school meals.  Meals will be available for pick up on:

  • A days – Tuesdays from 3:30-5:00 PM  (Students attending M/T)
  • B days – Fridays from 3:30-5:00 PM (Students attending Th/F and Virtual Academy-JVA)

Breakfast and lunch meals will all be sent at one time for all three days.  Student will be receiving three breakfast and three lunch meals picked up for those days not in school.  Meals will be perishable so must be properly stored in cooler or freezer—prepare as directed.

We ask that you sign up for these meals by August 24th if possible so we can properly prepare meals for the first pick up days:
  • Friday August 28th B day students.
  • September 1st A day students.
Pick up sites:
  • Middle school – back door of cafeteria
  • High School – cafeteria

If you have chosen the virtual academy we can certainly make accommodations as necessary.  This would include virtual academy elementary students that would want meals as well.

This option is available to all K-12 students based on our instructional phases and meal service needs

Health and Safety Plan for Re-Entry

Families,

Thank you for your patience and understanding as our Re-Entry Planning Committee has been working to create a plan for a fall school reopening.  Attached you will find a copy of the most recent draft of required Health and Safety Plan.  We will be holding an input session via a Zoom webinar on Wednesday, August 5 at 5:00 PM.  We will be emailing a link to that webinar on Monday, August 3, so please watch your inbox if you are hoping to attend.  This will also include some survey links to provide feedback on the plan to help us in preparation for a final approval with the school board.

JPS Says THANKS to Community Support

The Jamestown School District is fortunate to have the outstanding support of many in the community of Jamestown as we transition to an online environment.  With connectivity as a key piece of virtual learning, our students have benefited from online providers (Daktel and CSI), but also from donations.  The Jamestown School District was able to provide wi-fi hot spots to allow students to access our on-line learning programs through charitable donations from local businesses.  We extend our thanks to Fred's Den, The Wonder Bar, and the Knights of Columbus for their generosity in providing this funding!

JPS School Counselors Available

Dear Parents and Students,

We wanted to reach out and let you all know how much we miss our daily student interaction. As Counselor’s and Social Workers these interactions are so important to our work.  As we have adapted to this unprecedented situation we have found multiple modes of communication with students.  Counselor’s may provide services using private/password protected Zoom, Google hangouts/meets, Schoology, emails, or telephone calls to communicate with students and/or hold counseling sessions if needed.  If you have questions, concerns, or would not like to receive these services contact your child's counselor using the following methods below.

JPS Emergency & Virtual Learning Plan

Parents, Students and Staff,

Following is a brief update on plans for JPS and progress made towards a formalized virtual learning plan.

As you know, Governor Doug Burgum declared that all schools were closed through March 31 and directed all schools to create a virtual learning plan by April 1st.  The purpose of this plan was to allow the option to educate our students remotely instead of making up each day missed, beyond 3/31.

This plan had to address a number of issues including ensuring equitable services and the district’s plan to provide a high-quality, effective, and standards-based education through distance/virtual learning.   It can be viewed through this attachment and can also via our school district’s alert center.  Over the past week with our virtual learning pilot, we have already learned so much about what works and what does not.  Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve our instruction in this environment.

I am happy to announce that the Jamestown School District was one of the first Virtual Learning Plans approved by the Governor's Office.  The process was a three-step approval (Department of Public Instruction review team, Superintendent Baesler, and Governor Burgum).  Credit truly goes to all staff that has worked so diligently to get an excellent plan in place to educate our students virtually.

With the approval of this plan, and Governor Burgum’s executive orders, the district will plan to provide virtual learning for the foreseeable future.  If guidance from the Governor’s Office changes, the district may consider other alternatives, but, for now, the Jamestown School District will be continuing the virtual learning plan.  If circumstances change, we will provide additional communications to families as soon as possible.

Lastly, please note that with the transition of schools to an online platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this also means that school common areas, such as the MS green space, and school playgrounds are closed to the public.  We look forward to a time, hopefully in the near future, when we are able to see children enjoying that equipment and organizing time to congregate together.  Until then, however, we ask that all consider those places closed to the public.

Jamestown School District

JPS Internet Connectivity

Jamestown Public Schools wishes to thank area service providers and the Knights of Columbus for helping 61 district families to arrange Internet service. We appreciate the partnership with Daktel, CSI, and AT&T who have worked with our Technology Department and local families to assure all of our students can be connected during the COVID-19 shutdown.  The Knights of Columbus provided a generous donation to support hotspots for those families who needed that option to access virtual learning opportunities.

Staff Update

This has been an interesting couple of days and it is a situation that continues to evolve.  As these circumstances change, it also requires us, as a district, to pivot and reconsider initial plans.  Because we want our time to be purposeful, we are going to also take Wednesday to continue planning.  As such, we are not asking all staff to return to work until Thursday, March 19th and Friday, March 20th.

Note: building principals may continue to ask various staff to come in, as needed, to help the planning process for all teachers.

All Staff:  If you have traveled outside of North Dakota anytime the past 14 days, please complete a screening provided through the ND Department of Health.

COVID-19 Statement to Parents

Jamestown Public Schools Community,

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 has impacted schools around the country, the intent of this communication is to provide information as it relates to our school district and your children. Jamestown Public Schools continues to work with local health officials to help protect the whole community. Our school plans are designed to protect students and staff, while minimizing disruptions to teaching and learning to the degree possible.

Currently, Jamestown Public Schools has not been provided with any information that would constitute school closure for the prevention of spreading COVID-19. As such, JPS will be open on Monday, March 16th. Please know that this situation continues to be fluid and can change as community information and state guidance changes. JPS is in regular communication with local health officials, neighboring districts, and other agencies in monitoring this situation. If a decision to close Jamestown Public Schools is necessary, it will be done in collaboration and coordination with these agencies.

If your child is demonstrating symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath) please keep your child at home. Symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure. If you or your child develop symptoms, please contact your health care provider. If your child is sick, please call excusing them using our normal procedures. As always, Jamestown Public Schools will continue to honor parent prerogative on student absences and encourage parents to do what they feel is best for their child.

If you have recently traveled, please consider the following checklist from the Department of Health (https://bit.ly/2voj70x) to assist in making a decision related to school attendance.

In conjunction with the North Dakota High School Activities Association and the North Dakota Career & Technical Education Department, Jamestown Public Schools has suspended ALL student activities at this time. Every attempt will be made to reschedule missed events. Further guidance and updates on activities, use of school facilities by outside agencies, and other school events will be forthcoming in the very near future. We will continually monitor the rapidly changing responses to COVID-19 and make decisions on events as information is available.

Thank you for your continued flexibility and understanding to this ongoing issue.

Superintendent's letter addresses information on contagious illnesses

Students, Staff, Parents, and Guardians:

Cold and influenza (flu) season in the Midwest is in full swing. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms include cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, body or muscle aches, fatigue/tiredness. Not everyone with the flu will have a fever.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer the following precautions to keep you and your families healthy:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before leaving home, on arrival at school/work, after using the restroom, before food preparation, before eating, and when arriving back at home.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue, throw the tissue in the garbage, and wash your hands. If a tissue is unavailable, cough/sneeze into your flexed elbow.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently toughed objects and surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Stay at home if you are sick and do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick.
  • Influenza vaccinations are still available, which you can obtain through your student's health care provider or at Central Valley Health District. Note:  please call ahead at 701-252-8130 for hours and vaccine availability for Central Valley Health.

The flu season has been further complicated, this year, by a cluster of respiratory illnesses caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is currently engaged in a statewide response with local, state, and private partners to prepare for any potential Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The Jamestown Public School District is working jointly with Central Valley Health, the NDDoH, and other entities and continuing to monitor and review information regularly as this situation evolves.

We want to provide all stakeholders with some basic, but important, facts regarding the novel coronavirus:

  • This virus was first identified in the city of Wuhan in the Hubei Province in China.
  • There are currently no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in North Dakota.

The Jamestown Public School District precautions include:

  • Sharing information about proper handwashing with our parents, students, and employees,
  • Checking our cleaning product inventory and purchasing additional materials and supplies as needed,
  • Increasing the focus of the custodial teams on sanitizing high-contact surfaces, and
  • Monitoring absence patterns and preparing, if necessary, to share pertinent information with Central Valley Health.

For more information, please visit the websites for the CDC or the North Dakota Department of Health. If cases are identified in our community, we will work closely with medical experts to determine the next steps.

We will share necessary information via our school communication channels as appropriate. We will be opening an Update Center on our school district's website to serve as a resource on this topic. Please look for that in the next week.

The Jamestown Public School District takes the health and safety of our children and staff extremely seriously. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and take guidance from Central Valley Health and the ND Department of Health.
