BAND 9 (SYMPHONIC BAND) - Elective 9 - 1 credit

The Symphonic Band is a group of freshmen musicians who just finished their middle school band experience. Due to unique scheduling circumstances, there will occasionally be older students in this class. Symphonic Band is a course, so the group rehearses every school day and students' grades count towards their Grade Point Average. The Symphonic Band performs a variety of concert band repertoire that continues to develop technique and musicianship. Students from the Symphonic Band along with the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band make up the Marching Band and Pep Band.

CONCERT BAND - Elective 10-12 - 1 credit

The Concert Band is a non-auditioned group of sophomores through seniors. Concert Band is a course, so the group rehearses every school day and students' grades count towards their Grade Point Average. The Concert Band performs a wonderful variety of concert band repertoire. Students from the Concert Band along with the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band make up the Marching Band and Pep Band.

WIND ENSEMBLE - Elective 11-12 Audition Only - 1 credit

The Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group of juniors and seniors. Members are selected by an audition in the spring of the previous school year. Wind Ensemble is a course, so the group rehearses every school day and students' grades count towards their Grade Point Average. The Wind Ensemble performs a variety of concert band repertoire at the highest level of difficulty of all bands in the school. Students from the Wind Ensemble along with the Concert Band and Symphonic Band make up the Marching Band and Pep Band.

PRIVATE INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS - Voluntary - no credit

Students have the opportunity to take free instrumental lessons. Private lessons are a great way to prepare for auditions, solos, ensembles and music from band class.

BLUE JAY JAZZ ENSEMBLE - 9-12 Audition Only - no credit

The Blue Jay Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned group that is comprised of talented woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboard musicians from any of the three concert bands at JHS. Members are selected by an audition in May of the previous school year. This group rehearses on Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. During the winter and spring months, the Blue Jay Jazz Ensemble will perform a number of concerts in the city of Jamestown and participate in a jazz festival out of town. Instruments to be seen in the jazz ensemble are saxophone, trombone, trumpet, bass guitar, vibes, piano, and drums.

ORCHESTRA - Elective 9–12 - 1 credit

The orchestra consists of members from grades nine through twelve. Members are admitted when their playing proficiency allows them to function effectively within the group. String students in grades 9-12 rehearse together five hours a week for one credit. This grade counts toward their GPA. String members of the orchestra have the opportunity to perform solos and in smaller ensembles as well. This group participates in the State Orchestra Festival, instrumental contest, and All State Orchestra.

Choir rehearses five times each week and members receive 1 credit for their participation in the group. The grade received counts toward their GPA. The Concert Choir is actively involved in providing music for concerts, special school events and civic functions. A fundamental techniques course of study is followed with testing each nine weeks – the results make up part of the nine weeks grade received in choir.

The Choir is actively involved in providing music for concerts, special school events and civic functions. SHOW CHOIR - Audition Only- no credit

Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in Concert Choir
This group meets Tuesday and Friday at 7:00 am. They perform pop and show tunes with choreography. They perform for competition and for many community events.

VOCAL JAZZ - Audition Only- no credit


Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in Concert Choir
Vocal Jazz meets Monday and Wednesday at 2:15 pm. They perform for competition and for many community events. Their focus is to study jazz and techniques.

MUSIC THEORY - 11 - 12 - 1/2 credit

Music Theory is a year-long class that meets twice a week during 8th hour with an additional one hour per week computer time required. Students enrolled in the class should be able to read music notation. Students will work with notation, chord structures and composition.

PRIVATE VOCAL LESSONS/ENSEMBLES/POP GROUP––Voluntary - no credit

Students have the opportunity to take free voice lessons, participate in an ensemble of their choosing or form a "POP" group which can be expanded to include choreography. All opportunities for extra participation meet once each week with the choral director. Participation in Honor Groups and District and State Festivals is encouraged.

INTRODUCTION TO GUITAR & WORLD MUSIC - 9-12 - 1/2 credit

This class is a one semester class where students earn 1/2 credit. The class meets every school day and the students' grades count towards their Grade Point Average. It is designed for students interested in learning beginning guitar. No experience in music is necessary. This class is NOT designed for students who already play the guitar. This is a hands-on class where students will learn to play the guitar together in group instruction. Students will learn to read notes on the music staff, chords and strumming patterns. The class will be exposed to a variety of musical styles from around the world. Guitars will be provided for class use.
